Thinking about Birth Control?

Birth Control

What birth control options can I consider?

The team at Bella Women’s Care offers a full range of birth control methods. When you come in for birth control, your provider first reviews your medical history and performs a thorough exam to be sure you don’t have any health issues that might affect your decision.

Your provider explains the different contraceptives and answers your questions so that you can make the best choice for your future plans and lifestyle.

Some of the most common birth control methods include:

Birth control pills and patches can be 97% effective when they’re used consistently. For example, you can significantly improve the effectiveness of birth control pills by taking them every day at about the same time.

How do hormone-containing birth control methods prevent pregnancy?

The hormones used to prevent pregnancy cause one or more of the following changes, depending on which method you use:

Of all the hormone-containing contraceptives, the most effective — IUDs and the Nexplanon implant — belong to a group called long-acting reversible contraceptives.

What are long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs)?

IUDs and Nexplanon are LARCs because they’re inserted once, then they can stay in place for a long time. LARCs provide convenient birth control that’s just as effective as a tubal ligation, yet when you decide you want to get pregnant, they’re easy to reverse.

Nexplanon is a device that’s similar in size and shape to a small matchstick. Your Bella Women's Care provider inserts it under your skin, where it slowly releases hormones that prevent pregnancy for three years.

IUDs are placed in your uterus. Hormone-containing IUDs, such as Skyla® and Mirena®, can stay in place for 3-5 years before they must be replaced. Another type of IUD, Paragard®, contains copper rather than hormones. It effectively prevents pregnancy for up to 10 years.
