What is a miscarriage?

A miscarriage is embryo or fetus death before 20 weeks gestation. The majority of miscarriages are in the first trimester, and 10-15 out of every 100 pregnancies end in miscarriage today.

Does bleeding or spotting always mean miscarriage?

Not necessarily. Although bleeding or spotting can be an indicator of miscarriage, it's also a common occurrence during early pregnancy.

Your Bella Women's Care provider will tell you what to expect in terms of bleeding or spotting. If you're bleeding or spotting, look for other signs of miscarriage as well, and then get in touch with your provider if you need help.

What are the main signs of miscarriage?

In addition to heavy spotting or bleeding, you may also have some or all of the following symptoms in a miscarriage:

  • Back pain
  • Clots in your vaginal blood
  • Serious abdominal pain
  • Period-like cramps

If you're dealing with these symptoms during your pregnancy, seek medical care promptly.

What is a missed miscarriage?

A missed miscarriage occurs when the baby doesn't develop normally or dies in utero but you don't miscarry. Missed miscarriages are sometimes found during ultrasounds when there's clearly no fetal heartbeat and the fetus isn't growing.

What is the risk of miscarriage?

Risk of miscarriage increases with age. When you're under 30, chances of miscarriage are 1 in 10. Between 35 and 39, that risk increases to 2 in 10. After 45 years old, the risk of miscarriage is over 50%. Your risk is also affected by many other factors, including your overall health and your history of miscarriages.

If you're at risk for miscarriage, your Bella Women's Care provider will work closely with you to do everything possible to keep you healthy throughout pregnancy.

What can I do to lower my chance of miscarriage?

Some of the top tips for a healthy pregnancy and reduced chance of miscarriage include:

  • Avoid alcohol, drugs, and smoking
  • Limit caffeine
  • Exercise regularly (low-impact)
  • Gain the recommended amount of weight, but not more
  • Take prenatal vitamins
  • Eat a well-rounded diet that nourishes both you and your baby
  • Avoid stress
  • Only take medications approved by your provider

Your Bella Women's Care provider may also recommend other steps you can take to avoid miscarriage or at least reduce your risk.
